What is Reiki?

Reiki History

Reiki (pronounced “ray – key”) is a healing technique developed in the early 1900’s by Mikao Usui in Japan. It is an art-form that is passed from Master to student. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words, Rei & Ki, meaning universal life force energy. Reiki practitioners interact with this life force (light) energy to bring balance, relaxation, and well-being to clients.

All physical matter, including living things, is bound by energy – specifically by light energy! So it makes sense that balancing our energy fields would help us to achieve a more peaceful, healthful life. Reiki is not a cure for a disease or illness, but it may assist the body to facilitate healing. What is a Reiki treatment like?

To administer in-person Reiki treatments, the practitioner passes life force energy to specific points on the client’s body. A session is usually 60 minutes long. During the treatment, the client will rest comfortably on a massage table on their back with their shoes removed. Reiki can also be performed with the client sitting comfortably in a chair as well. Unlike massage therapy, no articles of clothing are removed and the client is always fully clothed. Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended.

A session can either be hands-on, where the practitioner will apply a light touch during the session, or hands-off, where they will hold their hands slightly above your body. If a client prefers not to be touched they can indicate this to the practitioner before they begin. Reiki can even be administered at a distance (see Reiki Treatment Options for more details).

A recipient of Reiki might feel a warming, cooling or tingling sensation during the session as the energy flows. Reiki sessions feel very pleasant, relaxing and invigorating.

About Me

Hi! I’m Melanie, a Registered Reiki Master/Teacher. I grew up in Western Canada, where I spent my childhood picking wildflowers and mushrooms, hanging out in my grandfather’s apiary, and asking too many questions.  My love of nature and appreciation for the mysteries of the universe continue to inspire me today in my life and work.  I am also a teacher who believes we should never stop learning and growing.

My Reiki journey began in 2019 when a dear friend, who was about to retire, wanted to teach Reiki to a few women who would happily carry on the lineage. I soon found that being attuned to Reiki energy positively affected my life so I continued my studies to the Master/Teacher level, and completed my Animal Reiki certifications. I combine the Usui and Holy Fire Reiki styles with my natural intuition to bring you a peaceful, relaxing Reiki session.
